A mind over matter challenge for one
Kevin is still trying to get his mind around it. And he is also smiling. As he becomes aware of his smile he immediately feels embarrassed. This was a serious situation and he needed to keep a serious mindset. However, it was his mind that was the problem.
He carefully sets everything back down. This time he is especially careful about letting things bounce on the floor. In fact, he sets everything down so gently, that barely a sound is made. It isn’t that he is trying to increase his ability to control it. He’s just trying to avoid Mrs. Edwards.
Mrs. Edwards lives in the apartment below Kevin’s. Furthermore, she is acutely sensitive to noise. Particularly noise from above. Or anything that Kevin does in his apartment. With this in mind, Kevin does all he can to avoid upsetting her. Which isn’t easy. Mrs. Edwards keeps a close eye on Kevin. Although she is an elderly lady, she is very alert. And as mentioned, acutely sensitive to noise.
A Mind Over Matter Challenge for One
Therefore, he sets everything down. Quietly. He has improved over the last few weeks. Practice makes perfect. That was what his grandpa used to say. However, he has noticed some drawbacks. Unexpected things. Although it’s funny to think of any of this as expected. Or normal.
He pours himself another cup of coffee, while he gets his clothes from the closet. As he mixes his coffee, he lays his clothes out on his bed and tries to decide which socks he will wear today. Meanwhile the coffee is mixed and he samples the hearty brew. This method of doing two things at once, in separate rooms, has been a work in progress. He’s getting better at it.
However, he was also learning about those unexpected things. For example, opening his front door with an absent thought. His guests had not really noticed the door opening without anyone there. Kevin had thought that he needed to answer the door. He didn’t even imagine himself doing it, as he had just done, with his clothes. Indeed, he just thought about it, and it happened.
A Challenge
Furthermore, that wasn’t the only thing with this …situation. Having a concern over his thoughts was just the beginning. Yesterday the building superintendent informed him that his mailbox had been vandalized. Several witnesses saw the box open, and the mail inside, blow out onto the floor.
It was alarming news at first. Then Kevin remembered thinking about checking his mail the day before. He had imagined himself opening the box and retrieving the mail. It isn’t lost on him that this could be a coincidence. However, the plaid socks he has chosen, are laying themselves on the bed next to the rest of his clothes. In the other room. Meanwhile, he is sipping coffee in his kitchen.
Mind Over Matter
The things he had just been levitating are all in the middle of his living room floor. He is up to fifteen items at once now. He can float them all at the same time, and then set them down. (Quietly because Mrs. Edwards.) And with only using his thoughts. Moreover, he is getting better at it. Considering it had only been three weeks since this began, he would say he is adapting well. However, he felt very confused about what was going on.
How has this happened? He can’t think of anything that would have triggered this. He has an ability that is quickly growing in strength. Additionally it is unlike anything he has ever known. There were already worrisome side effects, and this is why he wants answers. That was what he had been thinking about all morning. And yet he is still quite startled, when a loud knock sounds at his door.
