At the heart of the little things

Dave slams the door shut and stomps across the room. His mood has not improved, and Conner is sure it won’t anytime soon. He watches his friend sit down and open his laptop. Conner knows what is going to happen and he wishes Dave did too. But Dave was all about hope. And right now Dave is in a world of hurt.

Dave sits silently while his eyes scan the screen. His scowl deepens, as he takes a large heaving breath. Then he sighs heavily and drops his head into his hands. Conner watches and wonders if talking about it might help Dave. There is no doubt it is awkward, matters of the heart are sometimes the worst.

At the heart of the little things

He watches as Dave gets up and begins pacing back and forth in the office they share. It is obvious he is struggling to contain his disappointment. They have been best friends for over ten years, and have a friendship that goes beyond the office. In fact, it had been Dave that had consoled and helped Conner through a difficult time.

That had been a terrible chapter in Conner’s life, and Dave had been there to listen, and generally be a good friend. It pained Conner tremendously, to see Dave so upset. All the pacing is beginning to look frantic, so Conner decides to jump in. A distraction might help at this point.

“I take it things are still… not well?” Dave continues to pace, so Conner decides to go all in, “I’m sure she is just busy right now…she has all that responsibility, and all the people she takes care of everyday. You know she is amazing, and so thoughtfully kind. I’m sure she just has so many other things to do at the moment.”

Dave stops cold and looks at Conner with a look of sadness that breaks Conner’s heart. A tear drops from Dave’s eye as he quietly responds. “And how will I have any chance to try and help her?” Dave looks at the floor, and quietly adds, “She meant everything, she means everything to me. For years now. And now, she has gone away Conner”.

At the heart

Conner looks away from Dave’s gaze. It is too heavy and he knows nothing can be done for it. Dave looks back at the floor, and he begins to speak quietly now. His words are soft, and barely audible. Conner listens, because he knows his friend needs to get it out.

At the heart of the little things

“She is so very beautiful, Conner. Did you know, I think she doesn’t like it when I say I believe she is so beautiful? The thing is, I believe she is so beautiful in every single way. From the way she smiles, to the way she takes care of business, she is lovely and beautiful in every single way.” Now Dave is looking earnestly at Conner, he is aching, so Conner listens.

“I never thought in a million years, that she would even notice me. I was stupid flipped head over heels for her, from the very first moment I learned she was real, and not just a dream girl. After all this time, I only care for her, she was the sunshine of my days and my refuge in the dark of the night. And now I can’t even message her. I can’t even tell her I’m sorry, Conner.” Dave looks at Conner and slowly shakes his head. “I can’t even ask her why…”

The world

Conner’s phone chimes. It is time for their meeting with the other members of the team. This was an important one, and Conner hopes Dave will be able to focus a little better now that he had a moment to gather his thoughts. Dave turns and leaves the office for the meeting room. Conner follows Dave out of the office. He hopes it will work out. The world is hungry for love.
