Butterbeans and the deep roots company
The rumbling of the underground room eases as Alex tries to determine the extent of the Lieutenant’s injuries. She is unconscious but otherwise appears unharmed. Alex looks around trying to see what happened, there was trauma but no clue what kind.
There are still slight rumblings emanating from the floor as Alex checks the first aid kit. It is unclear what has happened to the Lieutenant, however it appears that she is stunned. There are no marks or bruises. And no traces of blood, mercifully.
With this in mind, he had to consider they were under attack. From whom or what isn’t clear. Except for Butterbeans. She knew. She was on to things, that no one else had discovered just yet. Her eager and happy reunion with Alex is short lived. Immediately, after greeting him, she becomes determined to get Alex on board with her knowledge.
Butterbeans
The Lieutenant is still unconscious as Butterbeans begins to make great efforts to get Alex to follow. He is perplexed, and tries to convince her to stay. But her barks of excitement have changed into short hurried appeals to follow. He checks again to ensure the Lieutenant is breathing, and will likely be okay while he follows.
He hurries after Butterbeans, who is leading the way further into the darkness. Alex is relieved to have his partner back, and follows her deftly into the darkness. They have trained as a team since Butterbeans had been old enough to bark. Currently it was a search and find operation, and Butterbeans had the top secret intel of the day.
Moreover, they would reach the end of this corridor soon, it wasn’t endless. There were undoubtedly strange things happening in Level 113, but it was easily remedied, with one call topside.
Alex must be sure the other members of the team are accounted for and safe. He is certain Butterbeans is leading him to them. With this in mind he is momentarily confused, when he smells the pungent odor of damp, earth dirt. He still sees her up ahead, on the fringes of the flashlight beam.
Deep Roots
However, she is no longer on solid flooring. In fact, neither was he. They were both walking along a cave-like tunnel now. There were no steel walls, no concrete floor, or led lighting. It was an all earth tunnel. Where level 113 used to be.
His confusion is great at this point. He had never encountered an unfinished level. However, Butterbeans has not slowed her pace. She stops and turns again and yips at him. She is intent on him following her.
He has never seen her this intent on any search and find. Furthermore, his confusion has increased. For as they move further into the tunnel, they appear to be moving further away from any construction, or civilization markers.
Yet his trusted friend and partner beckons him to follow. They move further into the unlikely and strange tunnel. As they do, Alex is struck by a profound realization. One that causes his breath to catch in his chest. Just ahead, Butterbeans has paused, intent on something in the tunnel in front of her. Alex stops cold. He hadn’t expected any of this…
