Butterbeans and the time well saved

Butterbeans is ready when the base commander arrives. She likes the commander, and knows why he is here. After a few moments of greeting they are ready to leave. Butterbeans is eager to get going. They have a long journey ahead, however it is one Butterbeans has been anticipating.

She is still adjusting to the way life changed after their trip below the surface. Indeed, they had barely made it back from the chambers deep below Level 113. Although their mission had been jeopardized from the start, by a rogue agent. Additionally, there had been many forces aligned against their mission.

Butterbeans and the time well

She misses Alex terribly, and she presses her nose to the gap in the window. The air has a crisp smell today. It has the scent of morning, fresh coffee and new beginnings. So, she listens as they move along the highway. The base commander confers with his chief of staff in the back of the command vehicle. They are planning ahead.

Likewise, Butterbeans knows this has something to do with the artifact from as many days ago. They were at the surface that day, and Alex told her to run. She ran. It had only taken her a few moments to reach the base commander. However, when she had turned to look for Alex, he was not there.

In fact, he was very far behind, and he was laying on the floor of the complex. At first, Butterbeans thought he was trying to avoid the dangerous exchange of gunfire. However, Alex was not getting up, or moving. Butterbeans had barked furiously for him to get moving. Yet he remained where he was laying.

Butterbeans had taken flight to get to him. Or, she had tried. The base commander, and several others, held her back. They were trying to protect her, but she hadn’t known it then. She fought fiercely to get to Alex. The Command SUV slows, as they near their destination. Butterbeans is now very alert.

Time and again

The base commander, Major General Ray Vreeland has a lot to consider this morning. This base has been under his command for the last five years. He is taking a few minutes this morning on his way to the project. A project that would have been lost, if not for this furry marvel of goodwill and her partner Alex.

The General is watching Butterbeans closely. All reports indicate she is holding up well. In fact she seems to be improving daily. He is watching her progress closely. In fact, he is considering another mission for this furry marvel.

Many more things are possible now, thanks to this extraordinary canine, and her partner’s efforts. Furthermore, the underground below Level 113, was only the start of things to come. The phone rings again. And he answers, listening closely. It is time for them to get going. Therefore he looks at Butterbeans once more. Would she be ready for what was to come?

All the way into the building Butterbeans trots ahead of the General. He feels impressed with her regal and stoic manner. They round the corner and come to their destination. Butterbeans looks up at the General as they near the door. And he smiles, and quickly opens it.

Butterbeans

Alex is sitting at the edge of his hospital bed with his discharge papers. In less than one second he is inundated in furry, and affectionate, greetings of extreme excitement. Alex is every bit as happy to see Butterbeans. Furthermore, he is eager to get started on their next mission. After a few days of rest and relaxation first. Somewhere above ground, he thinks. And they begin, almost immediately.
