Butterbeans the earthly one

Most times on these missions Alex is following Butterbeans. It was their training. Butterbeans had the mad nose skills, and Alex was good at observation. Also they had been partners since Butterbeans was a pup.

Alex had been with the military since he graduated college. In his second year, he had been selected for the program that would eventually partner him with Butterbeans. Not only were they important, but also they made a difference.

Their mission is simple. They explored unknown places first. Well, to give credit where it belonged, Butterbeans was always first. Their unique combination was a result of their unique similarities. In short, they were both too curious for their own good.

Butterbeans the Earthly One

Now, over a hundred feet below ground, Butterbeans leads the way again. The narrow path up, and back toward level 113, is tricky, but she shows them it is safe.

Alex helps the two members of the team find their way to the path. On the other side Butterbeans yips and paces. She is trying to keep the attention of her team. They must hurry, the odd old is returning. The first of the team members is safely across, and the ground begins shaking again.

Furthermore, the small path begins to crumble under the weight of the crossing. The Sergeant makes a leap for the other side, and clears the danger. Butterbeans leaps back across to Alex. He has fallen over the edge from the shaking of the ground. Alex is holding on to the side of the cliff’s edge. Struggling to regain the landing.

Butterbeans barks frantically, and paws at Alex’s hands. He is slipping, falling further over the edge. However, he smiles at Butterbeans and reassures it’s okay. She paws at him more. Now she looks to the other team members safely across, and she barks at them. However they are too far away to help.

Butterbeans

Butterbeans returns her attention to Alex, and paws harder at his slipping hands. She pulls at the cuff of his sleeve but it’s too little, too late. Alex slips. He falls away, down into the deep chasm below.

Butterbeans barks frantically, and yips in anguish. Alex has always been her person. Always there to welcome her, and greet her warmly and now he is lost, falling away. Butterbeans yips, then looks at the watching Sergeant waiting on the other side. She barks at him once, and then jumps into the chasm after Alex.
