Flight of the Custodian

Once upon a time, when it seemed as though the world was much smaller than it is now, changes could go unnoticed for decades. He had seen those decades pass. And he had waited and watched.

The old library was much more than what it appeared. Furthermore, its appearance was not set in stone. Though it did seem that way. He thinks of it as a part of time itself. Not separate from the rest.

It doesn’t take long for him to get the plane ready. He gets into the pilot seat and starts the small craft. It comes to life immediately, and powers up. It’s rarely used. Mainly because the day to day operations of the library didn’t involve frequent air travel. The old building sat quiet most of the time.

Nevertheless, he is in the air and flying just before sunset. However, the sun is setting quickly. And this isn’t the first time he’s been pulled down a path unknown. Furthermore, each time the book has opened, the circumstances have been different. He knows what is waiting, when he lands.

Flight of the custodian

There are always five chosen people. Additionally they are all given keys. Those are for what is beneath the library. He adjusts the plane’s course. A storm has formed on the horizon. A severe storm. In fact, it is this very storm that has brought about this flight. He pushes the small plane even more. Time was becoming very short.

The small plane bucks and shakes in the buffeting wind. He holds it steady as he makes for the old abandoned and forgotten town. There was once a small airport in this place. However, the runway is all that really remains. Furthermore he has landed here many times. But this was likely the last.

With this in mind, twenty minutes later he is on the ground. The storm is dark on the horizon, and the wind has picked up in intensity. As he exits the plane he knows time is shorter than he had previously thought. Therefore, he walks quickly to the hanger beside the runway.

The crate is waiting in the middle of the floor. Also it isn’t too large to carry by hand. The custodian carries it quickly back to the plane. The storm is blowing in quickly now. He must have the plane in the air before the tornado forms. Furthermore, all the five would be gathering soon. The crate and its contents are for the next part.

He accelerates the small plane down the runway. The lightning flashes rapidly. The effect is dazzling and the boom of thunder, deafening. He holds tightly onto the controls of the plane as he ascends. An hour from now the storm will remove all traces of the old, abandoned town.
