Full Circle – The Retrieval of Jupiter’s Heart

The room is quiet. Laraby sits near the exit. It’s impossible to decide if he still needs to be here. For all he knows his career is over. The disaster at the Recreation center is likely the final straw. Chief Fred Jones will have his badge. If not him, then the mayor. Ten minutes ago the office behind where he sits, was filled with angry shouting. In comparison, the silence after the angry shouting, is deafening.

Two ambassadors, the Mayor and Chief Fred Jones are in there. Laraby is not. In fact, he has a hunch he won’t be out here much longer. How could he have known this Callisto would have diplomatic immunity? Who the hell is he anyway? With this in mind, he looks at the exit again. There’s still time to leave. Except, where would he go? They were in it too deep to just walk away. In fact, Laraby knew things. Therefore, the Chief wouldn’t let him just walk away.

Five minutes later the door to the office opens. Laraby stands, expecting exiting dignitaries. However, it’s the Chief. He glares at Laraby and with a terse voice summons him,

“Laraby! In here. Now!” His eyes remain fixed on Laraby as the detective steps past him. Shoulders slumped and eyes down Laraby steps into his chamber of doom.

The doorbell rings again. Emma is almost there. Whoever it is appears to be in a hurry. As far as she knew they were not expecting company. In fact, they were still settling into the house. She reaches the door and pulls it open. For a moment she’s taken aback. The woman standing on the porch is beautiful and striking in her poise. Furthermore, she is staring at Emma with an intensity that borders on x-ray vision.

However, Emma senses a warmth from the woman. And when the woman smiles at Emma, she can feel the warmth. Likewise she feels an audible click. It’s as though she has come full circle. And for a moment they stare, and time seems to stand still. Then Emma finds her voice.

“Hello, how can I help you this afternoon?” Emma is beginning to like the woman already, and she hasn’t spoken a word. But that smile… something so familiar about her smile. She holds out her hand to Emma. Her smile doesn’t falter as she introduces herself to Emma. Furthermore, it is evident the woman is highly intelligent, and used to commanding authority. She holds out her hand as she addresses Emma.

“Hello Emma dear, I’m so pleased to finally meet you after all these years. My name is Mary Elizabeth, and we have much to talk about. Unfortunately we are running short on time, would you be so kind as to invite me in so we can talk?”

Jupiter’s Heart

Jupiter Davis walks along the beach. It is late evening and the waves are soft and the sound eases her troubled mind. It has been six months since she last saw Benjamin. Therefore she feels like it’s safe to walk the beach in the dark. In fact, she is actually pleased that she is still a mystery. Furthermore, Benjamin must be preoccupied since his henchmen still hadn’t found her. She smiles ever so slightly. In the soft moonlight the smile softens her and the stars seem to brighten.

Once upon a time they were a family. Now Mary Elizabeth has gone to start a family of her own. And they lost James Abner to the war. Moreover, somewhere along the way she and Benjamin began traveling in different directions. If not for the chance encounter, she would never have discovered all that she now knows. She looks out over the Ocean as another tear falls from her faraway eyes.
