How to make the best laid puzzle box plan without a key

Trevis looks at his dad while they study the strange box. They are sitting at the kitchen table. The box is on top of the table, between them. It isn’t very large but it is heavier than it looks. Trevis watches his dad turn the box carefully. There are engravings, and strange designs, covering the entire box.

It felt like a strange kind of metal. Trevis had a little time to analyze it while he carried it home. While it looked and felt solid, it didn’t weigh much. It was awkward to carry because it was about the same size as a basketball. Trevis pushed his bike, while he carried the puzzle box home. Puzzle box. The more he looked at it, the more it felt like a puzzle box.

He watches his dad slowly turn the box on the table. In fact, his dad hasn’t said much since they sat down at the table. Therefore he feels startled when his dad finally does speak.

“It looks like a puzzle box of some kind.” Trevis feels relieved that he isn’t the only one who thinks so. Furthermore, as his dad turns the box on the table, Trevis is able to see all the different designs etched into the polished metal. They are on every surface of the strange puzzle box. Similarly they are so finely crafted it isn’t possible to tell if there is a lid or compartment of any kind.

“Was there anything else on the ground? Was anything close by, or underneath it, when you picked it up?” His dad is still examining the box. Now, taking longer to examine each side. Trevis tries to remember everything about where he found the box. It was mostly buried when he discovered it. Furthermore, he hadn’t really taken the time to see if anything else was with the puzzle box.

“No, I didn’t see anything else. I think it was by itself. Right in front of the gate.” He watches his dad’s expression change from curious to even more curious. What if there was no way to open it? Furthermore, did it actually open? There was no obvious door or lid. Therefore, it was almost completely mysterious.

Without a Key

They spent a little more time examining the puzzle box that evening. However, it was the beginning of the weekend, and Davis had plans for both of them. Therefore they had to get ready for a trip to St. Louis. Davis needed to take care of some left over business from the move. Similarly he felt like it would be a good chance for them to see their old friends.

With this in mind, the weekend seemed to fly past. And in no time Trevis found himself preparing for school on Monday morning. The day was a brisk Fall weather kind of day as Trevis went from class to class. He had Mr. Roberts in his final period of the day. For this he was grateful. It made the end of the school day that much more exciting.

Today is no exception as the class with Mr. Roberts is one of the most interesting Trevis can remember. Therefore, it is a surprise when the final bell rings and Trevis’ classmates get up to leave. He is about to do the same when Mr. Roberts asks him to wait until the others leave.

The Puzzle Box

Trevis lingers until everyone has left the room. Then he looks at Mr. Roberts as the older gentleman sits back down at his desk. This is an unexpected turn of events and Trevis feels nervous as he watches Mr. Roberts. Then Mr. Roberts retrieves something from his desk. It is a small wooden box. He looks at it thoughtfully, before handing it to Trevis.

“You may find that this is very useful. In fact, I think you and your dad will know exactly what to do with it.” He watches Trevis quietly as the young man examines the small wooden box. Then the teacher speaks again. “It will do exactly what it is made for, and then everything will make more sense. Now run along Trevis. I’m sure your dad is waiting for you.”

Trevis leaves the school and grabs his bike from the bike stand. He wasn’t running behind today, so he is planning his normal route. But first, he wants to know what is in the box Mr. Roberts gave him. He looks at it closely. Then he turns it around and discovers the sliding lid. Once opened, he finds a small intricately etched key inside. He feels stunned. However, he knows exactly where it goes.
