In depth with Butterbeans

The tunnel is dark. However, they are not alone. Since leaving the area where the Lieutenant had been knocked unconscious, all signs of civilization had disappeared. The corridors of level 113 had given way to underground earth.

Not only was this unexpected but also unlike any level they had explored before. Alex catches up to Butterbeans. She has planted herself in the middle of the passageway. Alex can tell she is perplexed.

Since a pup Butterbeans has always been protective over Alex. Furthermore Alex was convinced Butterbeans considered him her people. Her responsibility. Of course this had only intensified as Butterbeans had grown.

In Depth

He joins Butterbeans in the middle of the earthy tunnel. This yields a profoundly unexpected sight. The passageway opens up on one side revealing a sheer drop off. Alex feels a moment of vertigo, as he looks out over the edge.

Furthermore, he backs away from the sheer drop off. It is still unexpected, and he has no idea how this place can be. They had explored this entire level the day before. Consequently they had found nothing out of the ordinary. Certainly no underground cliffs.

Butterbeans breaks her stance and turns to Alex. He is allowed a brief pat on the head before someone is back to business. She trots off, moving further into the darkness. Alex can no longer gauge how much further underground they have traveled. He is still trying to understand how all this came to be, when it simply wasn’t the day before.

With Butterbeans

With this in mind, it was common for the military to have more than a few secrets. In particular, from its own ranks. They have entered another cave-like opening in the underground passage. Leaving the cliff into the abyss behind. Alex follows Butterbeans.

Within a minute they find the rest of the team. They are both unconscious, the same as the Lieutenant. No obvious signs of trauma. Alex briefly wonders how this could be.

However, it is only briefly. At that moment, Butterbeans goes on the attack. Barking furiously and racing forward! And then all hell breaks loose.
