Marty and the magic cookie machine
The cookie machine was magic. There wasn’t another explanation that could describe it better. In fact, Marty suspected all along, that it was magic. As did anyone who knew of the cookies. That is the main reason Marty is fleeing this afternoon. He is trying to save his life. If he can.
The machine is simple, and started as some things do, a home project. Marty, is a retired engineer. And some days he has a little extra time on his hands. Therefore, he developed an abundance of special projects. Some were waiting for future parts. Or pieces of design, not yet developed. The cookie machine was not one of these. It was a fluke. Something Marty had not foreseen. However he built it, and it worked. Very well.
It wasn’t the hype that caused his troubles. Nor was it the effect of the cookies from the cookie machine. Indeed, absolutely anyone who ate one of the cookies, immediately wanted another. This effect was either the great taste of the cookies, or the results from eating one. Marty was sure it was the former. Consequently he was unprepared for the mass crowd that arrived for more cookies. In fact, he had underestimated how popular he, and his machine, would become.
Marty and the magic cookie machine
That was the rub. He did not build it to be magic or even unusual. It was a simple machine for baking cookies, and he was a simple retired shop owner. Yet the cookies were not what anyone had expected. No one noticed in the beginning, but after the miracles started happening, people caught on pretty quick. Furthermore, Marty only sold three batches of cookies. Hardly enough to create such a stir. However, each and every cookie, somehow produced unusual miracles.
The first was Timothy Jones. He was a young lad, born without sight. Marty was astounded when Timothy’s parents returned to his shop the next day, for more cookies. All the while they were gleeful, and excitedly proclaiming joy for the apparent miracle. Timothy could see. For the first time in his life he could see.
Marty would have dismissed this as a coincidence, if not for his next visitor. Erving Crenly, who was now the richest person in the entire county. Two days before, Erving was living in the homeless shelter down the street. He came by Marty’s shop, and was gazing into the front store window, when Marty saw him there. Knowing his story, Marty had gifted him a couple of his magic cookie machine cookies. The very next day Erving came to Marty in a new suit, and very well groomed. He purchased all of Marty’s remaining cookies for a healthy price and asked Marty if he would be making more.
Miracles
For Marty’s part, he couldn’t understand what had happened, yet he couldn’t deny it either. Erving was absolutely changed. Something had happened, and Erving was convinced Marty’s cookies were the catalyst. Therefore Marty decided to try one for himself. What could go wrong? It wasn’t as though he hadn’t taste tested one from each batch. Perhaps if he had one from the last batch he would see a miracle too.
He didn’t. Other than an awesome taste, and crispy texture, the cookie brought no miracle to Marty. However, even more people showed up, because they heard about Marty, and the magic cookie machine. Furthermore, they wanted a miracle too. Convinced that Marty knew just what to do, they began to gather outside his small shop. Then even more people showed up. Marty handed out the remaining cookies, but they were too few. Furthermore, the crowd had become restless and much larger.
Decisions
Later that day the town constable had arrived to clear the street in front of Marty’s shop. Not only had he cleared the crowd, but also he asked Marty many questions about his machine. Later that evening, the crowd returned, and that is when Marty knew, he was in a fix. However, it wasn’t enough to cause him to flee for his life. In fact, he was planning another, larger batch of cookies when he got the phone call. The phone call changed everything. Now, Marty hopes he can save his own life. He is thinking this, as he packs the magic cookie machine, and flees his shop forever.
