More with a memo that works

James is ready for the plummeting feeling. He braces himself for the shouts and chaos that never comes. Indeed, twenty minutes later, and they are landing. The touchdown uneventful, other than a bump or two. Fifteen minutes after that and they are inside the airport waiting for their luggage.

This is the end of the requirements for his service to his country. From here, he is taking another flight home to Anna. He cannot wait to see her again. They have been apart for three weeks. Consequently, they decided to take a vacation together once James was back and rested.

More With a Memo that Works

He retrieves his suitcase and goes to the lounge area to wait for his connecting flight. According to his itinerary he will be leaving in an hour. As he makes himself comfortable, in one of the lounge chairs, he thinks back on the past few months. His life had changed completely since the day he found the Memo pad.

He isn’t confused or unclear on what has happened. In fact, if he needed proof, he only has to look around. He is sitting in an airport having just completed basic training for a spy program that had already been cancelled. James smiles a little at the irony. One couldn’t make this stuff up. It was too unreal.

Later, after his flight home, he comes back to these thoughts. Upon his return home, he greets Anna, and they take some time to catch up. Then in the late evening, he finds himself sitting in his office, studying the memo pad. He has made four entries into the memo pad.

His most recent addition to the memo pad was in a hurried form. He remembers the panic he felt. Furthermore, he remembers feeling worried about confiding in Anna. He still hasn’t told her about the memo pad. And what, he wonders, would he tell her?

Memo pad

He barks a quiet, rueful laugh. Then he imagines trying to explain to her that everything he writes in the memo pad happens in real life. As if to prove the point his eyes flow over the second entry in the little book. “Marry Anna Bolden!” He smiles when he thinks of her. Was this really happening?

This thought echoes throughout his mind as he studies his plight. Should he think of it as a plight? His only real concern was sharing this with Anna. He thinks about his life before Anna. It wasn’t much of a life. While it was true that becoming a millionaire overnight, had changed a lot, it was Anna that changed everything.

With this in mind he feels like he is on the edge of something. A realization that can change everything. It is tantalizingly close but still out of reach. Therefore, James decides to make another entry in the memo pad. He is ready to double down.

Sharing

He removes the cap from the pen, and just under his previous entry, he writes his memo. Maybe it will be more with a memo that works. The ink is barely dry when the phone rings. It startles James and he checks to see who it is. It’s Anna, and James immediately answers the phone.

He is relieved to hear her voice. After they exchange their care for one another, he is filled with a sense of apprehension as she says five words that stop him cold, “We need to talk, James”.
