Read my lips – The bargain at the book store

The air is hot and still. The sun blazes bright in the noonday sun. Hannah is sitting in the shade of a small tree outside her office. It’s her lunch break and she has almost the entire break remaining. Her lunch is sitting on her kitchen counter, at home. Right where she forgot it earlier this morning.

Now, she is sitting quietly and wondering what she will do with the remaining time in her lunch hour. Her office is located in the business district of the city. The street outside her office is one of the few in the city with actual trees. Hannah enjoys the shade of the trees at lunch. A free spirit at heart she prefers to have her lunch outdoors. It gives her a reprieve from the stuffiness of the office.

With this in mind, she always brings her lunch. There are no eateries in this part of the business district. Therefore her lunch today would be less filling than normal. As she studies the scene around her, the activity of the busy street seems to have its own rhythm. In fact, she feels slightly intrigued. She’s usually eating her lunch and studying her ledger. That is why she is seeing the little book store just across the street, for the first time.

The Bargain at the Book Store

The interior of the store is warmly lit and inviting. The store clerk is an older gentleman who politely welcomes her into the store. The place is small in comparison to the larger book stores further in the city. It is obvious the shop is a private venture. There are books everywhere. In some places the stacks go from floor to ceiling.

There are shelves on every wall and they run the length of the store. All filled with every kind of book imaginable. Similarly, the back wall is full with books. In fact, Hannah wonders if there is even a back door. The little book store exudes age and mystery. She feels instantly mesmerized as she slowly makes her way into the maze of stacked books.

The scent of age and antiquity fills the small store. She wanders further into the place as she studies the covers and titles of the books she sees. Almost every one is old, and well worn. Therefore, the place feels more like a time capsule, than a book store. She isn’t even half way through the stacks of books, when something catches her eye.

The old book store is filled with books. From floor to ceiling the stacks are everywhere in the store. Hannah, feeling mesmerized and slightly nervous, is slowly making her way to the back of the store when a bargain display catches her eye. It has several books on the small shelves and a sign just above that reads: Special Deals Today Only.

Although Hannah has plenty of time, she begins to feel a sense of urgency as she looks at the stand with the bargain books. There aren’t many, however there is one book on the top shelf of the little bargain stand. It is marked fifty percent off. This would be a tempting deal by itself, but that isn’t what convinces Hannah the book is for her. It’s her name in the title that does that. Now she feels more than nervous as she picks up the book and examines the cover. And in fact it does read: How Hannah Saves Carter.
