Secrets of the blood moon horizon
“Are you sure?” Gina passes the tripod over to Seth.
“Yes I’m sure. Just be careful when you climb back down.” He takes the tripod and begins anchoring it in place. This had to work. If they could get actual footage of this, who knows where it could lead. Of course they were banking on it happening again. And frankly, they didn’t even know how it happened the first time.
Three years earlier
The drawings on the stones are what caught Seth’s attention. At first, he isn’t sure what he is seeing. The only light in the cavern comes from above. In fact, if it wasn’t noon, it would likely be dark in here. However, the drawings are compelling, and old. Very old, by the looks of them. They are on every wall in the large cavern. Furthermore, the designs are intricate, and a little bizarre.
Seth lives in the Midwest. Arizona to be exact. Every weekend he explores the various canyons in his state. Not only is it good exercise but also a fascinating history lesson. There is always something interesting. Sometimes fossils are the only things he finds. Other times he finds caves. Or, similarly, a cavern or two. This one was not easy to spot. Its entrance was hidden behind an outcrop. Indeed, if not for the strange drawings on the rocks Seth wouldn’t have seen it.
Now, as he stands inside the cavern, he takes in all the strange drawings. As his eyes adjust to the dim lighting, he begins to see the chamber is part of something much larger. The chamber is roughly forty feet across. Additionally, it has a square shape. This strikes him as odd the moment he enters the space. Although ancient, it is obviously man made.
Secrets of the Blood Moon
He spent some time taking pictures of the drawings. Until he discovered the steps at the back of the cavern. They led down, into the floor, of the large chamber. He gazes into the darkness further below. Should he chance it? His curiosity wars with his common sense for a minute. On the one hand, this is way cool and he feels certain he’s the first to see any of this in centuries.

But was that worth the risk? It wasn’t as if he couldn’t come back tomorrow. Besides, it was getting late in the day. Additionally, the light has already changed in the chamber. Seth checks his phone. It’s nearing sunset outside. Here in the chamber it’s getting darker. The last thing he needed was to get lost underground, in a strange place like this. Furthermore, he can ask Gina to join him tomorrow. They had plans to watch the blood moon anyway.
The following day Seth is watching Gina’s reaction to seeing the chamber for the first time. They spent much of the previous night discussing it on the phone. Gina and Seth have explored more than a few caves. But nothing like this. As they look around the chamber, they slowly make their way to the back of the cavern, where the steps lead down into the darkness. Seth looks at Gina, “These are the steps I was telling you about”.
Blood Moon Alignment
The steps lead down into the darkness. On the floor of the lower chamber, there’s more light than it seemed from the vantage point above. In fact, there appears to be a deliberate opening allowing a point of sunlight from above, to enter the lower chamber. Seth looks around, and as far as he can see, there are no walls down here. Except for the point of light at the center, this lower chamber appears to be endless.
“What the hell is this place.” Gina’s whispered voice is a contrast to the deep silence of the underground area. Seth’s eyes water up a little from the effect. However, he doesn’t have a chance to answer, for at that moment the entire underground chamber begins glowing in a deep, crimson red. Seth turns to look at Gina, and they are not alone, anymore.
The glow in the lower chamber intensifies, and now Seth can see thousands of forms around them. Furthermore, the multitude stretches away from him and Gina, in every direction. The effect is chilling, yet riveting. Gina steps closer to Seth as many more thousands of ethereal forms appear. They are in a sea of ghostly forms. Then, as if on cue, the multitude raises its voice as one, and cries out. Then they vanish. All in one blink. The blood moon is over, and the chamber is dark again.

Present Day Arizona
“Do you really think it will happen again?” Gina is back on the floor of the underground chamber. Seth is roughly eight feet up on the outcrop of rock at the center of the chamber. The tripod is set and the camera is ready.
“I don’t know what to expect, really. It still feels like it was a dream. Are you really sure you saw your sister, when it happened before?” Seth watches Gina closely as he climbs down.
“She was standing right beside me Seth. I know it was her. I don’t know how, but I would know my sister anywhere.” Gina stares into Seth’s eyes. He can see her sincerity and knows she is on the level. Even though Gina’s sister had been gone for over twenty years, Seth believed her.
