The best interview tips not to follow

It was just an interview. Not the first one I’ve been through. However, it was certainly one of the more interesting ones. For starters, it was an interview with an AI. Furthermore, the AI would be the one asking the questions. This was a first in my experience. AI has been a topic of interest lately. In fact, it seems like AI is turning up everywhere. Now it is even giving interviews to prospective job candidates.

This is not terribly new. More than a few companies have begun using AI agents. There are a number of areas these agents can cover. The most common, in my opinion, are chat bots. However, it wasn’t a surprise that an AI agent could conduct an interview for a specific role. It was unusual, but not surprising. Furthermore, it was an interview that required a camera. The camera records the responses to the interview questions.

With this in mind, it also appeared to be a way to ensure the interviewee, me, was the one actually doing the interview. As stated previously, this was my first time interviewing with a nonhuman. I wasn’t sure what to expect. Similarly, I didn’t have any interview tips to draw from, nor any recent experience being interviewed by AI. This was a first, in many ways.

The Best Interview Tips

It was a spur of the moment thing. For example, it’s a busy day. There are lots of chores to tend to, and errands to run. However, an opportunity is still an opportunity, no matter when it presents itself. This one came in unexpectedly. Therefore, it was an interview with little to no, preparation. That wasn’t going to be a problem, I told myself. However, I wasn’t completely sure.

It was an AI interview. Therefore, I knew it would be unpredictable. Besides, how much could a machine understand about work? Or a job? It just didn’t seem like an AI could relate to split second judgement calls, and years of experience. And it can’t. However, it can be programmed. It can ask questions and follow up with related questions. There’s information to draw from, and it’s available in many places.

It felt like a good idea to get the interview underway as soon as possible. Admittedly, I was feeling very skeptical. And after a few minutes of preparation, it began. The questions were relatable only to general situations. For example, it wasn’t a question that sought a record of an accomplishment. It was about the steps taken to achieve the accomplishment. From the start I realized some interview tips would have been helpful.

Tips Not to Follow

Some interview tips could have been useful. However, are there individual tips for a particular kind of AI interviewer? Is there a blueprint or a specific method for acing an AI interview? Furthermore, would a human be any different? If there was a schedule of questions to ask, a human could ask them as well as an AI. Or maybe not. It felt like an honest conundrum.

I feel well versed in my field of expertise. I know the work. Therefore, I was fairly certain an AI would lag in being able to relate. Yet that wasn’t entirely accurate. Interview questions can be related to more than just the work. In fact, some interview questions have nothing to do with the work. It may seem like the ability to do the job, and do it well, would be a deciding factor in the process. However, sometimes it’s about how well the interview goes.

Interview Tips

Half way through my AI interview experience I realized I was not going to have the answers the machine was looking for. Although it was interesting and new, it hadn’t gone too well. For one thing, I felt certain I heard the AI roll its eyes on at least two of the answers I gave. Similarly, when I added a little context, like how things are different from twenty years ago, it didn’t help much. It was like speaking to…a machine. So I tried a joke. Needless to say the interview was over shortly thereafter.

Preparation may, or may not, have helped. It’s likely an AI interviewer has questions only the company doing the hiring knows. One thing is certain though, an AI interviewer is all business. And it’s no joke. Save the jokes for after the interview. Thanks for reading.
