The cover up under the pool
It seemed simple, at first. In fact, he watched about every video made on the subject. To say he was well versed, was an understatement. Of course he pulled the appropriate permits. However, this project was one he expected to do on his own. He had a specific thing in mind. Then, it became obvious he was in over his head. Literally.
Danny Lissington was a truck driver by day. And sometimes by night as well. He lived in a modest two story home, in a modest suburb. His neighbors were mostly strangers, although he occasionally waved a greeting. With this in mind, Danny recently began investing in his modest home. After twelve years in the same house, it was time for a bit of change.
The Cover Up Under the Pool
Danny lived alone. He once was married. However, over time, they grew in separate directions. It was a mutual agreement to part ways, and they still talked occasionally. These days, Danny spent most of his time on the road. Therefore, he was ready for some at-home time. Not only at-home time, but also special projects time. Thus, he decided he wanted a pool.
However, he didn’t want just any pool. He wanted to design and build one for himself. The reason was twofold, but mainly because of one unforgettable event the summer before. Back then he was near his destination on one sunny and hot Tuesday. It was the hottest day on record, and his air-conditioning wasn’t working. It was hot. Furthermore, the traffic was at a standstill.
For three hours Danny baked in the bright sun, and boiling heat. He began fantasizing about diving into a cool, pool of water. In fact, the hotter he got, the more he fantasized. His obsession with the pool was born that day. Indeed, he felt determined to achieve his dream of a cool pool. Regardless of any hold-ups he might face. Unfortunately, he hadn’t been able to predict the hold-up, he was currently facing.
The Pit
Although Danny is sitting at the edge of the newly dug hole, in his backyard, he can still see the thing in the hole below. He is sitting roughly six feet above it, and he has already uncovered another three to four feet of…it. Whatever it is. There is one thing he knows for sure. He cannot finish the pool until it is gone.
This was his third day digging. He started digging with a backhoe. This had the bulk of the dirt moved, early on. His pool wasn’t large. It was twenty feet across and thirty feet long. Therefore, he already had a large opening in the ground. It resembled a deep, open pit. Except for the thing sticking out of the middle. It.
He climbs back down the ladder into the pit. Then he steps around the object, and traces his fingers across the top of it again. He is sure it is part of something larger. In fact, he is looking at only one corner of it. The edge leading away from him disappears into the still unmoved earth behind it. However, the part he has uncovered resembles the top edge of a structure. Perhaps a door or a window of some kind.
Under the Pool
The object is deep in the ground that surrounds it. If Danny had to guess, he would say he has uncovered something old. He doubts any past survey of the land would have uncovered it. Now, as he scrapes more dirt from the base of the object he feels certain he is uncovering a door of some kind.
So far he has managed to uncover about a quarter of the door’s entire surface. As he dusts away the clinging dirt from the structure he wonders if he should alert anyone. He frowns as he thinks this. Who would he alert? The hole police? Danny smiles slightly as he continues dusting away the dirt. Maybe he should do some deep research on the history of his home. Perhaps there are stories from the past that will shed some light on this.
The cover up under the pool
He is thinking all this as he dusts away the lingering dirt. Then, at that moment, a rumbling sound comes from the dirt beneath his feet. He feels vibrations in the ground. The sound is low, and mechanical. It ends abruptly, and the corner of the door in front of Danny, whooshes open.
