The only way up with Butterbeans
The sound of Butterbeans’ barks and snarls fills the chamber, and the agents are spreading out as if to out flank Butterbeans. Alex has arrived in the nick of time as he takes up his position next to his friend. The air is heavy with tension as the agents try to surround Alex and Butterbeans.
Additionally, the agents have cut off any path to the portal. This has become the encounter Alex had worried about. There was no way to know how far the agents were willing to go. They seemed intent on preventing any access to the portal.
The only way up with Butterbeans
Butterbeans is on full alert now. The agents have them cornered, and she is ready to defend Alex, and herself, against many agents if needed. Furthermore Alex has caught up now. Now she closes ranks with Alex. As she gives the menacing agents her most serious warning, she is suddenly aware there is someone else here.
She feels a bolt of excitement as she becomes aware of the Sergeant and the Lieutenant hidden among the boulders in the upper ledge of the cavern! Furthermore, she feels a welcome sense of hope. Then, as if on cue, several more agents rush into the large chamber.
As the odds tilt even further away from their favor, Butterbeans presses closer to Alex. The agents are herding them back into the passageway. Additionally, they are cut off from any other route. Therefore, she feels surprised when a bright flash of light illuminates the chamber with blinding intensity.
The only way up
The Sergeant sees the agents trying to out-flank Butterbeans and Alex. He knows once the agents are in position, there will be no escape. Furthermore, he is ready as soon as the Lieutenant gives the signal. They are outnumbered and the odds were changing by the second.
As the Sergeant watches more agents fill the chamber, he sees Butterbeans press in closer to Alex. The tension in the air is heavy as the Sergeant gives the Lieutenant a pleading look. The Lieutenant signals back. They will be waiting. At least for a few more minutes. The sergeant can’t help but feel a sense of urgency. Then, from out of nowhere, an intensely bright light fills the chamber.
When the Sergeant’s vision has returned the first thing he sees is a large crowd. He blinks, and looks again. In the chamber below there are now many more players than before. The odds have been evened it seems. There are at least twenty different Butterbeans barking and fiercely defending their ground beside Alex. The Sergeant can hardly believe what he sees.
With Butterbeans
Alex sees the additional agents join the first few. Outnumbered and outflanked, they have no access to the Eternity Gate. The agents have every path blocked. He has an idea that is the plan, as the additional agents move to herd them back into the passageway behind them.
Then a flash of intensely bright light causes him to shield his eyes. When he looks again there are no less than twenty individual Butterbeans, and they are all barking and snarling furiously. Furthermore, the agents are now the ones being herded backwards.
Alex looks at Butterbeans who is also looking a bit confused. Likewise, he is sure they will not get a better distraction. Butterbeans bolts for the Eternity gate and leaps into it with Alex close behind. They are through the portal, and out of sight in less than a second. Leaving the chamber with the confused and stunned agents in a flash. As well as an eerie silence.
