The Scotch game of Renwell – The pawn ticket

The first time is the test. After that it’s always on. This was it’s design. However, that isn’t the scary part. The scary part is classified. Therefore, it could not be discussed. That is how Renwell thinks of every task he encounters.

In terms of being classified, or not. It isn’t that he needs to live in this way. It is more ingrained and personal. Indeed, this is his job. His destiny.

With this in mind, he orders the team to close in. Using the holder’s co-workers to lure him out, was an old tactic. A scotch game of sorts. However, it was a tactic that often worked. Furthermore, it was a tactic that Jenson wouldn’t be able to counter. Because he wouldn’t see it coming. It was now imperative to remove Jenson from the field of play.

Renwell ends his communication and prepares his papers for the briefing. The Rook Division was expecting the report in thirty minutes. This left Renwell just enough time to address one other, small, detail before leaving.

He leaves his office on the third floor of the building, and uses the elevator to descend. His destination is the sub-basement of the building. There is only one access point, and this is it. Everything below the ground floor of this building is classified. Particularly where he is going now. Only two others have clearance for this area. And both must be approved by Renwell. Per visit.

The building is old. Also it is one of the best kept secrets in the world. Since long before Renwell came to be here. Furthermore, the contents of the building are every bit as secret, and classified, as the place itself. The elevator stops at the sub-basement. Renwell leaves the car and walks down a stone hallway. He fishes in his pocket for the appropriate key card, and uses it to open the internal barrier.

Once inside the cavernous room, he walks quickly to the back area. Here he encounters another door. This one has a scanner that will only work for Renwell. In fact, it is lethal to anyone other than he. As his scan processes, the door whooshes open. Stale air reeks outward and Renwell steps into the smaller vault room.

The scotch game

The room is empty except for a largish container, sitting on the floor in the middle of the room. The container appears to be glowing, although Renwell and the Rook Division know better, now. In fact, the only other times this container (a large box of unknown origin) has ever glowed before, is when the pawn ticket was first found. Renwell walks slowly around the box. It is glowing brightly now. They have no information on its contents. Nor, do they have any way to access them.

Furthermore, despite monumental effort, they have been unable to reverse engineer it. As they have done with the other things they found in that desert crash so long ago. Likewise, it had been a fluke that finally pointed them to the pawn ticket connection. However, they were brash, and moved too quickly. They had eliminated the holder of the pawn ticket. They had not realized until much later, that losing the holder cancelled the connection. That was fifty years ago.

The pawn ticket

Through research, they knew something beyond this universe was tied to the pawn ticket. Furthermore, this strange glowing crate, put off so much energy in its current state, it required a special room to keep it secure. Additionally, it only became energized when the pawn ticket generated somewhere. Renwell stares at the container. He feels a great sense of curiosity at its contents. In an almost overwhelming way, he desires to know what is inside.

He turns to leave the room. As long as the container remains energized, the holder of the pawn ticket is well. Renwell locks the door behind him. As he does, he receives word that the team has secured the pawn ticket. They have the holder, and are bringing him now. This is good news. Furthermore, Renwell knows the council of the Rook division will be eager to get underway. Immediately.
