Unlucky at love and one strange destiny loop

Unlucky at love and one strange destiny loop.

If this is the path to love, he just can’t see it. Dustin sweeps up the last of the glass and puts it in the trash can. That should be the last of it, however he checks to make sure. The last thing he needs is something else going wrong. Next, he closes the back door, and then the front door. Shouldn’t be needing either of those for the rest of the evening. That just leaves the door leading into the garage.

The smell is so strong. However, the fan still runs. It sits in the doorway leading to the garage. Anita already left so there was no need to move the fan tonight. Nor was there any hope for a love connection. Besides, the house needed all the help it could get, at the moment. Who could have imagined a skunk would show up on a date night? It was mid January. Dustin isn’t completely sure, but shouldn’t all skunks be hibernating?

Furthermore, it was Anita’s idea to visit Dustin’s house. Therefore, he wanted to make a good first impression. And it didn’t go well at all. They were literally chased around his living room by a skunk. A skunk. In the middle of January. Dustin decides to leave the door to the garage open. Best leave the fan running too. No telling how long it’s going to take for the smell to fade. He offered to pay for the dry cleaning of Anita’s dress, but he’s pretty sure she won’t be contacting him any time soon.

Unlucky At Love

Dustin doesn’t have a date night very often. Not that he doesn’t want to date. In fact, he enjoys meeting people and adventuring. However, something always happens. Something that ends the date. Or worse, stops it before it even starts. Like the Llama. Who would have ever suspected a Llama could snarl traffic on two major interstates? Certainly not Dustin, or his planned date for that evening. Dustin became stranded in the traffic jam. All he could do was wait and listen to the traffic report on the radio.

That’s how he learned about the Llama involved jam. A Llama. On the interstate, at 6:30, on a Friday evening. It just wasn’t possible to make this stuff up. Of course, he never had the chance to make up for the date. However, the Llama made a full recovery, and now lives at the zoo, and has a Llama family. Dustin didn’t give up though. He might be unlucky at love, but he is no quitter. Instead he tried again on another day.

This time they actually made it out to the arena for the concert. It was a packed venue. But Dustin planned their seats to be near the front. He was seriously into his date. Therefore, he wanted to impress her. There was also a very robust dinner arrangement for after the concert. And just after making it into the arena they somehow got separated. Then Dustin was mistaken for a gatecrasher. This caused him to be tossed and banned from the concert before the band even played one note.

One Strange Destiny Loop

Yes, it is highly unusual to get sprayed by a skunk on a second date. The odds might be against it, but Dustin knows for a fact the odds aren’t zero. In fact, it’s so outlandishly crazy that Dustin didn’t even consider how the skunk got in the house. There were no gaps in the foundation. Nor were there any open places in any of the floors. He wrinkles his nose as he walks past the garage again. He may have to replace the carpet.

With this in mind, to say a skunk is completely unexpected would only be partly true. However, there comes a point when it just seems like something isn’t right. Like there’s more at play than just bad luck. What’s worse is that he really likes Anita. Although he knows it’s extremely unlikely she will ever speak to him again, he can’t help but wish things would have turned out differently.

An image of the skunk doing its thing remains fixed in Dustin’s mind. As the small creature turned its flank and prepared to cut loose, it was plain to see Anita was the target. Dustin managed to get between the olfactory assailant and Anita, but not before some of the attack hit the mark. There’s no way to recover from something like that. A Llama induced traffic jam was one thing but a skunk attack was just unheard of.

Love Lucky Le Pew

The following day Dustin spends most of the morning scrubbing the carpet. By the early afternoon the carpet is very clean, but the smell is stronger than ever. In fact, it smells like his whole house took a spraying from the mysterious ninja skunk. He would be lucky if Anita didn’t make him pay for her dress, instead of the dry cleaning. Speaking of Anita, he checks his phone for messages. Nothing. Best to accept it.

After twenty more minutes of scrubbing the carpet, he decides it might be time to get some fresh air. After all, he is going to be the only one in the house. Surely he will adapt to the smell soon. Especially, if he’s exposed to it night and day. Dustin cringes when he thinks about days and weeks trying to live with this smell. And forget entertaining at home. No one could stand being in the house longer than five minutes.

And on the heels of that thought the doorbell rings. Dustin feels slightly surprised because he is not expecting company. He feels even more surprised when he opens the door and finds Anita standing there. She is wearing a gas mask and carrying a picnic basket, and a second gas mask. Although Dustin can’t see it, he can tell she is smiling beneath the mask. Then she says, “How about it handsome, want to go for a picnic? I’ve got gas masks in case we run into any rogue olfactory offenders”. And just like that, Dustin is no longer unlucky at love.
