A mind over matter challenge for health and wellness

It’s all about motivation. Except for when it isn’t. Having the desire to accomplish a goal is at least one third of the work. However, there are times when work is just a four letter word. It has to be done. But that’s a tall order when the enthusiasm isn’t there. Without enthusiasm work tends to be arduous and boring. The same as exercise.

With this in mind, is it even possible to put the fun back into arduous and boring? Actually that just sounds enticing. Arduous and boring are components of everyday life. For example, sitting in a major traffic jam. Talk about arduous and boring. Everyone has experienced this at one time or another. Furthermore the first thing most of us do is look for a distraction to pass the time.

It all goes back to that old saying: Time flies when you’re having fun. It’s a relative thing. Similar to, mind over matter. However the axiom is sometimes misunderstood. It’s not – if you don’t mind it doesn’t matter. In fact it’s much less complicated. It’s a state of mind.

A Mind Over Matter Challenge

Health and wellness are also more than words. Similarly, the word exercise is more than the promise of an arduous experience. It’s a beneficial philosophy. However, there are times when the motivation just isn’t there. This is when another philosophy can be helpful. This one says discipline trumps motivation.

It’s a form of mind over matter. And all it needs to be effective is a start. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. A good start makes all the difference. Especially when motivation feels low. Exercise and working out aren’t meant to be fun. Or are they?

What about the little ones on a playground? Ever try to keep up with them? They run almost nonstop. Parents know they have to coax, bribe and demand, just to get everyone off the playground and heading home. Where does all that energy come from? Most parents don’t think about it too much. Mainly because of the exhaustion from dealing with all that energy. The little ones are masters at mind over matter.

Health and Wellness

Unfortunately adults are more salty than the little ones. There is no pretending that push ups are exciting. Nor is it fun to miss out on high calorie, no benefit, foods like candy, or cookies and cakes. When deprived of high fructose corn syrup, adults can get a little edgy. And this is just with health and wellness.

So, back to the discipline trumps motivation concept. It is a mind over matter statement. It is also a positive way to get a start. A start is definitely better than no activity at all. Furthermore, after the start, the rest is all downhill. Just like the little ones, it’s all in the mindset. See the goal as complete in the mind, and the hurdle doesn’t matter.
