A summer reading plan for the new season.
There is a certain sense of adventure that comes from reading. In fact, there is a sense of freedom when imagination is at work. Stuck at home on a rainy afternoon? It’s a great time for reading. Once upon a time, reading a book, or a magazine, was the normal way to get information. There was no such thing as a device, or the internet, for reading. Especially the news.
Back in those days people got the news from a real, tangible, reading medium called a newspaper. It had several different ‘sections’. Furthermore, those sections were the source of many disputes because they were so popular, and everyone wanted to read them first. (Especially the comics.) There were editorial pages and the ever popular Classifieds. Then, there was the Opinion section which often featured a popular writer, or journalist. The opinion page grew in popularity because it had the feel of summer reading. Nevertheless, news articles had to be verifiable and true. The opinion page was exempt and could have any topic.
In those days, editors expected journalists to write articles based on facts. Except, the opinion page. And even then, facts were still relevant. That was one thing that made the whole newspaper feel like summer reading. Trustworthy news and the opinion page. (And the comics, don’t forget the comics.) These days it might be hard to imagine a world without the internet. But that world did exist. It was the world of books, newspapers and magazines. Furthermore, libraries were essential. And they still are.
Summer Reading Plan
Reading is learning. And knowledge is power. Both are good examples of the many benefits that come from reading. Learning through reading is one of the greater benefits of reading. Back in school, one primary goal of the summer reading assignment was to keep fresh. In other words, stay up to date. Keep the skills in tune. Back in school it was easy to drop everything at the end of the year and take a vacation. Then, by the time the Fall season rolled around, everything from the previous school year was only fragmented memories.
Not only did the summer reading assignment help with reading skills retention, but also it had a pleasant side effect. Adventure. Or maybe the work of a particular literary genius. Then there are the books for learning about real historical events. Whatever the list contained one thing was certain, there would be a lot of reading.
However, it wasn’t arduous like it…well, like it reads here. This may not be arduous reading, but it’s not castles and dragons either. In most stories the villain has struck by now. Or the sales pitch is just ahead and the switch up in focus, is just a distraction. It’s definitely one of the two, and like any riveting article, the reader gets to decide which. But whatever you do, don’t look behind the curtain.
The New Season
One of the goals of this site is promoting the essential skill of reading. Especially as it relates to health and wellness. Furthermore, the internet and social media have made it possible for more creators to bring their creative ideas to life. Whether it be poetry, short stories, or needlepoint.
With this in mind, some upcoming articles will be from contributors. The articles will be introduced as contributor articles and as always, comments and questions are welcome. Additional short stories will be available soon; and for fans of the Twin Gardens tale, the series continues with a surprise twist. That is all the editor will allow us to say at the moment, so stay tuned.
