We were ready for breakfast. The plan was for the traditional menu. Eggs, real sausage, biscuits and gravy and a side of waffles. The basic breakfast. The good stuff. The junior chef was sipping some chocolate milk, in anticipation of a good breakfast, when inspiration struck.

The little one has long been a fan of breakfast bowls. Especially since he discovered he can still play games on the phone, and eat the bowl as an after thought. Convenience and fun. Rolled into one.

This morning his inspiration was for a breakfast bowl. Furthermore, not just any breakfast bowl. This bowl needed all the ingredients. Or the basic five, which is close to all the ingredients. From previous experience we learned there should be a sequence to the prep of the bowl.

One thing we learned, the hard way, was to go easy on the gravy. Once that gravy is in, it can’t be taken out, except by munching down. However, the problem with too much gravy is that it hides all the eggs. Somehow the sausage is always visible, but the eggs, not so much.

This is where we got into trouble with the cheese as well. Too much gravy made the cheese runny. In the frozen breakfast bowls, the cheese is never runny. It’s melty. Indeed, this makes a big difference. Especially in the taste of the bowl.

Additionally, that is why our recipe for the homemade breakfast bowl is very basic without measured quantities. It’s up to the person how much of any one food to include in the bowl. We went with our basic five ingredients:

  • Eggs (scrambled)
  • Sausage (cooked)
  • Cheese (shredded cheddar but any will do)
  • Gravy (Either flour gravy or canned gravy)
  • Biscuits (Any kind)

With this in mind It’s the way we stacked them this time that matters. It was closer to the good stuff according to my junior chef. We stacked our bowls like this:

  • 1-gravy first
  • 2- crumble a biscuit on top of gravy
  • 3- crumble cooked sausage over biscuit
  • 4- put scrambled eggs on next
  • 5- sprinkle shredded cheese last

We stacked it this way and found out that the ingredients have an excellent balance. Furthermore, the eggs don’t get lost in the gravy and the cheese stays melty, not runny. Additionally, there are many possible combinations. This is our homemade breakfast power bowl. Thanks for reading today!
